- Optimism
Optimism did not do one big drop. It ran several, each with its own rules and a claim step. Airdrop 5 is the best documented, and it shows how this ecosystem rewards activity.

Optimism’s model is a series. According to a governance forum analysis of Airdrop 5, Optimism has earmarked 19% of the initial token supply for airdrops, had issued five airdrops at the time of writing, and had about 550 million OP left. The same post notes that Airdrops 1 and 4 required eligible addresses to claim, as Airdrop 5 did, and that for Airdrop 4 the need to claim was found to be a barrier to receiving it.
The post does not give dates or criteria for Airdrops 1 to 4, and we could not find them in a first-party page we could open, so we do not reproduce them. Our Optimism airdrop page carries what we have verified, and the ended airdrops list shows it alongside others.
The initial OP supply, per the capital allocation documentation, was 4,294,967,296 OP. The same page says tokenholders vote on token allocations and that the Foundation stewards the treasury, which tells you who to watch: distributions are governance decisions, not marketing campaigns.
The governance post lists the following. The drop was sent on October 9, 2024: 10.4 million OP to 54.7 thousand addresses. The analysis treats addresses with 50 OP or more as eligible for its threshold test. The eligibility period was March 15 to September 15, 2024.
Interacted with 20 or more unique Superchain contracts, with a contracts-to-transactions ratio of at least 10%, in the eligibility window.
Notice the second condition. A ratio rule means ten transactions across ten different contracts looks different from ten transactions on one contract. It is a built-in filter against repeat clicking on a single app, and it is a good example of how a modern rubric measures breadth.
On top of the main reward there were seven bonuses, each within the same window unless noted:
Read the list as a map of what Optimism valued: governance participation, sustained use, breadth across the Superchain and early adoption. None rewarded a single burst of volume. For the practical implication of rewards like these, read airdrop farming and the note on NFT airdrops if you are curious about the SUNNYs category.
Two of the bonuses are worth singling out because they cut against the usual advice to spread thin. Active Delegator rewarded OP held and delegated over time, which is a cost: the tokens had to be held first, so the category favoured people who were already invested. Quester and SuperFest depended on dated programmes that are over, so no one can qualify for them now. That is the general shape of a retroactive drop: some doors close before the airdrop is even announced.
The governance analysis itself was written to test whether Airdrop 5 improved user retention, using a regression discontinuity around the 50 OP threshold. Whatever you think of the method, it shows that Optimism treats airdrops as experiments with published results. That openness is good for researchers, and it is also why a careful reader can find the rules instead of relying on a third-party summary. If you want to understand how such programmes sit alongside points systems, our points programs explained guide compares them.
This tiny tool applies only the Superchain Power User main criterion from Airdrop 5, as listed by the forum post. It is historical and illustrative: it cannot tell you about any current drop, and the real test also depended on the dated window and on how the team counted contracts.
The governance post’s finding about Airdrop 4, that claiming rewards was a barrier to receiving the airdrop, has a safety angle that people overlook. A claim step is the moment when a scammer can substitute a fake page. If eligible people must claim, they will search for the claim page, and search is where fake pages live. The official Airdrop 5 page we could open at app.optimism.io/airdrops/5 showed only the title “OP Mainnet Gateway”, with no claim deadline, eligibility rules or status that we could read. Our deadline of October 2025 comes from the project record, which in turn relied on reports of what that page showed.
The networks page lists OP Mainnet with chain ID 10 and the explorer explorer.optimism.io. ethereum.org describes OP Mainnet as an EVM-equivalent Optimistic Rollup, and Optimism’s docs describe the OP Stack as the framework that powers it and many other chains that share a standard configuration. Wallet and custody basics are identical to Ethereum; see our Ethereum ecosystem page.
The fee documentation splits cost into two parts:
| Fee | What the docs say |
|---|---|
| Execution gas fee | Gas used times the gas price, where the gas price is the base fee plus an optional priority fee. Gas used matches what the same transaction would use on Ethereum. |
| L1 data fee | The cost of publishing the transaction to Ethereum. It is the only component that differs from Ethereum and is charged automatically to the sender. Its formula has changed across upgrades, and a transaction’s maximum L1 data fee cannot currently be capped. |
The docs do not publish a typical cost, so we do not. The uncapped L1 data fee is the point to remember: your wallet’s estimate is the number to rely on, and a fee spike on Ethereum flows through to OP Mainnet.
On exits, the Standard Bridge page says transfers from OP Mainnet to Ethereum complete in 7 days because of the withdrawal challenge period, withdrawals need an additional transaction to relay the message, and deposits from Ethereum usually finish in 1 to 3 minutes. If you plan to take part in anything that requires funds on OP Mainnet, factor in that asymmetry.
For the general taxonomy, read crypto airdrop scams, and for the habit of cleaning up approvals after interacting with unfamiliar contracts, revoking token approvals. Use a burner wallet for any app you have not used before.
One practical takeaway from the whole series: an eligibility window is only meaningful if you can read it. Airdrop 5’s dates, thresholds and categories are written down in a public post, and that is the standard we apply to any future claim. If a campaign cannot show its window and criteria in a place the Optimism team controls, we would treat it as unverified, however confident the presentation.
Not that we can verify. No newer airdrop than Airdrop 5 appeared in the official pages we reviewed, and the Optimism blog titles we saw for 2026 cover enterprise, tokenization, privacy and upgrade topics rather than airdrops. Because titles are not full posts, we hedge that: a distribution could be discussed on the governance forum before reaching the blog. The campaigns list at the top of this page is where we would record one. Until then, the position is the same as for most mature ecosystems: potential is not confirmed.
See the Arbitrum and Base guides for how neighbouring rollups differ, and the ecosystems overview for the rest.

Optimism’s governance forum states that five airdrops had been issued as of its analysis of Airdrop 5, with about 550 million OP left of the 19% of initial supply earmarked for airdrops. The post gives dates and criteria only for Airdrop 5, so we do not repeat figures for the earlier ones.
No. Airdrop 5 was distributed on October 9, 2024, and the claim deadline was in October 2025, which has passed. The official page we could open shows only a gateway title, so the deadline comes from our project record rather than that page. Treat any new claim for it as suspicious.
The main reward went to Superchain Power Users: addresses that interacted with 20 or more unique Superchain contracts, with a contracts-to-transactions ratio of at least 10%, between March 15 and September 15, 2024. Seven bonus categories rewarded delegating, frequent use, multi-chain use, early adoption, quests, SuperFest missions and SUNNYs NFTs.
Optimism docs say transfers from OP Mainnet to Ethereum through the Standard Bridge complete in 7 days because of the withdrawal challenge period, and withdrawals need an extra user transaction to relay. Deposits from Ethereum usually finish within one to three minutes.
We do not track a verified active one. No newer airdrop appeared in the official pages we reviewed, and none of the recent titles on the Optimism blog index mention airdrops. Future distributions would be decided through Optimism governance and announced officially, so check the forum and blog first.
