What qualified participants did
- Used OP Mainnet and other Superchain networks during the eligibility period (Airdrop 5: March 15 to September 15, 2024).
- Interacted with at least 20 unique contracts with a contracts-to-transactions ratio of at least 10% for the main reward.
- Earned bonuses such as active OP delegation, frequent weekly use or activity on several Superchain chains.
- Claimed on the official Optimism airdrop page before the deadline (now passed).
- Today: no open OP airdrop was found in the official pages reviewed; ignore claim offers.
Where things stand
Optimism is not a single airdrop but a series of them, run by the Optimism Collective. The OP token was created in May 2022 with an initial supply of 4,294,967,296 OP, and the first airdrop opened the governance system. Later rounds followed with different criteria. The most recent round that we could verify from official sources is Airdrop 5, aimed at users of the wider Superchain.
Airdrop 5 distributed 10.4 million OP to about 54.7 thousand addresses on October 9, 2024, according to a post on the Optimism governance forum. Eligible users had to claim, and the official airdrop pages show a deadline in October 2025. Since that date has passed, the status here is ended. The exact day is shown inconsistently between pages (October 8 and 9), and our fetcher could not read the page body, so treat that part with caution.
We did not find any announcement of a new OP airdrop in the official pages we opened, and the Optimism documentation does not cover airdrops in its governance section. Retro Funding, a separate programme that rewards projects rather than individual users, is run through other channels; we could not verify its current status, so this page does not describe it as an open opportunity.
How eligibility worked
The main reward in Airdrop 5 was the "Superchain Power User" criterion. To qualify, an address had to interact with at least 20 unique contracts on the Superchain and keep a contracts-to-transactions ratio of at least 10 percent during the eligibility period from March 15 to September 15, 2024. The ratio condition is a simple anti-farming measure: repeating one action many times does not raise the number of unique contracts.
Bonus rewards stacked on top. An Active Delegator needed at least 9,000 OP delegated multiplied by days delegated. A Frequent User made at least 10 app transactions a week in at least 20 distinct weeks. A Superchain Explorer used at least seven chains. Other bonuses covered early adopters of new chains, completing an Optimism quest in late 2022 and early 2023, participating in SuperFest missions in summer 2024, and minting NFTs from at least three contracts registered for a campaign.
Earlier rounds used other rules. Airdrop 2, for example, was sent directly to wallets, and official channels warned users to avoid sites claiming to distribute it. Optimism has also said that past eligibility does not guarantee future eligibility, which is worth remembering when reading old guides.
- Main criterion: 20 unique contracts and a 10% contracts-to-transactions ratio.
- Bonuses for delegation, weekly use, multi-chain use and past campaigns.
- Snapshot window: March 15 to September 15, 2024.
What participants did and the risks that remain
Participants checked the official airdrop page, connected a wallet and claimed within the window; some chose to delegate their OP in the same flow. Anyone who missed the deadline could not use the official claim afterwards. We did not find a published late-claim route.
The Optimism community has repeatedly seen scam sites copy its airdrop pages, and some rounds were distributed without any claim page at all, so a site asking you to "claim" can be fake even if a round once existed. Use only addresses linked from optimism.io or the governance forum, and never share a seed phrase.
What to take from this drop
Optimism is a good case study in how criteria change from round to round. Early rounds rewarded being early and paying gas on the network; later ones rewarded breadth across applications and chains, and then delegation to governance. A strategy tuned to one round did not carry over.
It also shows that a project can distribute value in other ways. Optimism describes its capital allocation work, including grants and retro funding, in its documentation, so users who build or contribute may find other routes than a user airdrop. This page is informational and not financial advice.
